INVITATION: MAHMOUD DARWISH, WORLD-RENOWNED PALESTINIAN POET
MARCH 10TH | THU | 7PM | VÁCLAV HAVEL LIBRARY | OSTROVNÍ 13 | PRAGUE 1 Lecture, Poetry and Music: An International Evening Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Birth of Mahmoud Darwish (1941–2008) Keynote: Subhi Hadidi, acclaimed Syrian literary critic and Darwish scholar based in Paris (in English). Darwish in the Czech context: Dr František Ondráš, Arabic literature specialist from the Institute of the Middle East and Africa at Charles University in Prague. Poems read by actors Karel Dobrý, Sara Arnstein, Jiří Šimek (Czech), Daniel Brown (English), Hélène Genet (French), by the translator, Burhan Kalak (Arabic), and by Herbert van Lynden (Dutch). Featuring Arabic music played by Marwan Alsolaiman and the singing/recital of Darwish’s poems by Monika Načeva. At the end of the evening, the audience is invited to stay and have a taste of Palestinian delicacies!
Mahmoud Darwish The poet, writer and journalist Mahmoud Darwish was born in the Galilean village Al-Birwa near Acre on 13 March 1941. He died at the age of 67 in Houston, Texas (USA) on 9 August 2008. Darwish published around thirty collections of poems and eleven books of prose that were translated into more than twenty languages. Publications in Czech consist of the collection of poems Přicházím do stínu tvých očí, translated by Burhan Kalak (Nakladatelství Babylon, 2008) and the collection of stories and essays Deník všedního smutku, translated by Luboš Kropáček (Nakladatelsví Novinář, 1989). Darwish won numerous prizes for his literary work; in Europe, most notably he was awarded the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture as well as the Prince Claus Award in the Netherlands. “Darwish is a lyricist of the motherland, of life and of love, who gained world wide recognition”, comments his translator into Czech, Burhan Kalak. The event is organized by Friends of Mahmoud Darwish's Poetry, in cooperation with the Václav Havel Library, the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Prague, the Institute of Near Eastern and African Studies at Charles University in Prague, Prague Writers Festival, PEN Club Prague, ARABFEST Association, Czech-Arab Centre for Cultural Dialogue INSAAN, “Nad Prahou půlměsíc” Festival, and Éditions Fra.
