Eight right-wing Israelis were evacuated by Israeli police from the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound for carrying out violations Tuesday morning amid increased tensions around the flashpoint site during the Jewish Passover holiday. Israeli police spokesperson Luba al-Samri said the three right-wingers “violated the rules and regulations” stipulated for non-Muslim visitors during a group visit to to the holy site. The Jordanian government on Sunday warned Israel of “serious consequences” after a string of Israeli violations were reported at Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem during the holiday season of Passover. Jordanian government spokesperson Mohammad al-Momani in response to alleged violations said: “Israeli violations by Israeli troops and settlers against Al-Aqsa are against all the international law and agreements and that may lead to very dangerous and huge consequences.” In the statement al-Momani urged the Israeli authorities to stop all violations against Palestinians and allow their right to worship at the holy site. Israeli police tightened security around Al-Aqsa and the Old City following concerns over increased tensions that commonly mark the Jewish holiday of Passover, during which thousands of Jewish worshipers flock to holy sites in the area while Palestinians face increased restrictions. While the majority of Jewish pilgrims have visited the Western Wall adjacent to Al-Aqsa this holiday, right-wing Israeli extremists calling for the destruction of Aqsa to pave way for construction of the Third Temple have called on Israelis to carry out sacrifices at the holy compound, a number of whom have been detained or evacuated from the site. While Jewish visitation is permitted to the compound, non-Muslim worship is prohibited according to an agreement signed between Israel and the Jordanian government after Israel’s illegal occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967. Despite this agreement, the Israeli authorities regularly allow Jewish visitors to enter the site -- often under armed guard. Such visits are typically made by right-wingers attempting to unsettle the status quo at the site, and coincide with restrictions on Palestinian access, including bans on entrance and detentions. Two Palestinians were detained and nine Israelis were evacuated on Friday after armed forces escorted a group of right-wing Israelis to the area to carry out religious "sacrifices" for the Jewish holiday of Passover. http://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=771281
